Sauna Insulation: How to Build a Room That Holds Heat
Proper sauna insulation means mineral wool in the walls, a foil vapour barrier, and an air gap behind the cladding. Here's how the layers work together.
Insulation is the invisible half of a good sauna. You never see it once the cedar goes up, but it’s the reason the room heats in forty minutes instead of ninety, holds its temperature against a Canadian winter, and doesn’t rot from the inside out. The layers have to be assembled in the right order, and each one has a job.
The short answer
A well-insulated sauna wall is a stack of layers: mineral wool in the cavity, a foil vapour barrier on the warm side (reflective face into the room), a small air gap on battens, then the wood cladding. Together they keep heat in, moisture out of the framing, and the room quick to warm.
The wall, layer by layer
Working from the framing outward toward the room:
- Framing cavity — filled with mineral (rock) wool. Non-combustible and rated for heat, it’s the standard sauna insulation.
- Foil vapour barrier — aluminium foil facing the room. It blocks hot, humid air from pushing moisture into the wall, and reflects radiant heat back inside.
- Air gap — a 10–20 mm ventilation gap formed by battens over the foil, so the cladding can dry and heat spreads evenly.

Why the vapour barrier matters most
The single detail that ruins saunas is a missing or backward vapour barrier. A sauna’s air is hot and, during löyly, briefly humid. Without a barrier, that moisture drives into the insulation and framing, where it condenses, soaks the wool, and eventually rots the structure and breeds mildew.
The foil does double duty: it reflects the heater’s radiant energy back into the room, which is part of why a foil-lined sauna heats so much faster than a bare one.
Don’t forget the ceiling
Heat rises and pools at the ceiling, so the ceiling is the most important surface to insulate — often with more depth than the walls. A poorly insulated ceiling bleeds your hottest air straight out the top, and no heater can keep up with that. Insulate it generously and seal the vapour barrier across it continuously.
Insulation and everything else
Insulation doesn’t work alone. It sets up two other systems:
- Heater sizing. A well-insulated room needs less heater. The sizing rule — about 1 kW per 1.3 m³ — assumes proper insulation; a leaky room needs more capacity to compensate.
- Ventilation. Insulation seals the wall, but the room still needs a deliberate air loop. Plan the intake and exhaust vents into the insulated shell, not through it as an afterthought.
